“I got my first public library card at six and it changed my life. I no longer wanted to be a fireman but a writer. After the US Army and the University of Pennsylvania, I got my degree from Sarah Lawrence College, going on to a postgraduate course in Nice (CUM), majoring in roulette and oranges in the morning and in the afternoons, sending picture postcards of Cannes and Monte Carlo to friends back home.

“After that, a stint as Madison Avenue copywriter...articles in the Sat Eve Post and columnist for the Village Voice...Contributing Editor for Helen Gurley Brown at Cosmo and most recently, a long stint in radio, mostly as talk show host.”

Bill’s had seven books published by major houses (see list below). Now at work on a new novel, he teaches at Columbia College, Sonora, Ca. His first work of non-fiction, “Cool, Hip & Sober,” (Forge Press), is in bookstores now.

Advance, Critical Opinion:

Bill Manville's “Cool, Hip & Sober"
“In my 55 years of journalism, I’ve seen a lot of people--including reporters and politicians—die from drink and drugs. COOL, HIP & SOBER could have prevented their untimely deaths. In fact, my only complaint is that Bill Manville didn’t write and publish COOL, HIP & SOBER 55 years ago. It will undoubtedly save a lot of lives. Poignant and poetic, frank and funny, it makes sobriety seem quintessentially cool, so hip it hurts. COOL, HIP & SOBER is a book to give those who suffer and to the friends and loved one who suffer along with them. It is a book destined to redeem us all.” Jack Anderson, Pulitzer-Prize-winning columnist

“Just because I’m in this book doesn’t mean I can’t praise it, as indeed I do, to the heavens. Reading it, I was so moved time and again as I experienced the loveliness of truth in these extraordinary pieces, written by people who have been to the edge, flirted with the end, and returned to new and better lives.” Dominick Dunne

"An excellent layman's guide to the new generation of drugs which hold promise of ending addiction in our time." Ernest P. Noble, Ph.D., M.D., Pike Professor of Alcohol Studies and Director, Alcohol Research Center, UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute

“I’ve given one quote in my lifetime – to the girl who persuaded her boss (Bernie Geiss) to publish ‘Sex and the Single Girl’…Here comes the second! ‘What an inspiring book! Doesn’t hurt that the author is a superb writer. I never read anything like this and am thrilled to recommend the book to anybody with the problem himself or with a suffering family member.’” Helen Gurley Brown, Cosmopolitan.

"From the drinking man's classic, "Saloon Society," in the Sixties to his sadder but wiser, "Cool, Hip & Sober," Bill Manville has consistently provided an honest, insightful first-person account of where alcoholism begins--and where it ends. The hard-won wisdom of his latest book will be of value to anyone who is struggling with addiction." Keith Humphreys, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychiatry Stanford University School of Medicine

“Recovery is at least as much art as science. When addicts realize they must stop, one of their first questions is, "Is that the end of fun?" Bill’s language and first-person experience make the reader feel it’s cool and hip to be clean and sober. An enormous step in winning the battle." Deborah Parker, writer and lecturer.

"In my 21 years in the field, many books have crossed my desk – factual and up to date but difficult for the troubled layman to act on… that is why I think "Cool, Hip & Sober" unique. It is of great value to be able to provide my university students with this accurate portrayal of addiction…As a member of the growing community of recovery, I am grateful for a text that bridges the gap from that professional perspective to the world of families who have known the personal truth of the journey so richly described in Bill's remarkable text." Dr. Dave Moore, University of Washington; former Director, McDonald Rehabilitation Center, Scripps Memorial Hospital, San Diego.

"The topics touch upon all areas of addiction; your answers are based on scientific knowledge and are easily understood. Best of all, I appreciate the respect and sensitivity you show for people suffering from drug and alcohol addiction." Susan M. Gordon, Ph. D., Director of Research and Professional Training, the Caron Foundation.

“A compilation of hard-won wisdom and sound advice from someone who has not only been there himself but has drawn from the experiences of many other survivors of the addictions wars.” Dr. Gordon Livingston, psychiatrist and syndicated columnist.

“When I become an addict, Bill Manville’s book will be the one I use to rescue myself, because it’s fun to read and will make sobriety entertaining, as he is.” Novelist Herb Gold

“…a powerful roadmap to recovery. If you have a question, Bill’s book has an answer that might provide the key to a healthy, happy future.” John Rothmann, Talk Show Host, KGO, San Francisco.
